You Will Need
Our homemade pizza dough recipe is quick and straightforward. You’ll need these ingredients:
- Plain flour
- Olive oil
- Yeast
- Sugar
- Water
- Salt
You’ll also need a large bowl, a wooden spoon or spatula, and a clean surface to knead the dough. Working with yeast and flour can get a little messy, so make sure you’re organized and keep everything in order.
Proof the Yeast
The first step for almost all pizza dough recipes is proofing the yeast. Start by combining some water, sugar, and yeast and allow it to rest until it becomes frothy and bubbly. This will take around 5 – 7 minutes.
It’s critical that you only use warm water. If the water is too hot, the yeast will die, and the dough will not prove. Around 105°F is optimal. If you’re not confident in guessing, use a thermometer to take the temperature.
Make the Dough
After the yeast has proofed, add a generous slug of olive oil, 2 cups of flour, and a dash of salt to the mixing bowl. If the dough starts to cling and clump together, add additional flour as required.
Transfer the dough to a floured area before kneading thoroughly for about 6 minutes, till it forms a smooth, workable ball. If you have a standing mixer, you could use this instead. Again, add small amounts of flour if the dough starts to stick.
Let it Rise
While you can use the pizza dough at this point, letting it rise will give it a better texture and consistency.
If you have time, cover the dough with a towel or cloth, and place it in a warm place for around 30 minutes or until the dough has doubled in size.
When you’re ready to make your pizza, add some more flour to your surface and use a rolling pin to form your pizza bases.
